싸움이 헛되다 말하지 말라

싸움이 아무 보람 없다고 말하지 말라,
수고와 상처가 헛되다고 말하지 말라.
적은 지치지도 무너지지도 않고,
세상은 예전 그대로 남아 있다고 말하지 말라.
희망이 우리를 속였다면, 두려움도 거짓말쟁이일 수 있다.
저 연기 속에 가려진 곳에서,
그대의 동료들이 바로 지금 달아나는 적을 쫓고,
그대만 없었다면 이미 들판을 차지했을지도 모른다.
지친 파도가 헛되이 부서지며
여기서는 고통스러운 한 치도 얻지 못하는 듯 보여도,
저 뒤, 작은 만과 물길들을 지나
바다는 말없이 밀물 되어 들어온다.
동쪽 창문으로만
날이 밝을 때 빛이 들어오는 것은 아니다.
앞쪽에서는 해가 느리게, 얼마나 느리게 오르지만,
서쪽을 보라, 땅은 밝다.

Say not, the struggle nought availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.
If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke concealed,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.
For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.
And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light,
In front, the sun climbs slow, how slowly,
But westward, look, the land is bright.
