Love not me for comely grace,
For my pleasing eye or face;
Nor for any outward part,
No, nor for my constant heart:
For those may fail or turn to ill,
So thou and I shall sever:
Keep therefore a true woman's eye,
And love me still, but know not why;
So hast thou the same reason still
To doat upon me ever.
Modern rendering
고운 자태 때문에 나를 사랑하지 마오,
내 기쁜 눈매나 얼굴 때문에도;
겉으로 드러난 무엇 때문에도 말고,
아니, 변치 않는 내 마음 때문에도 말고.
그 모든 것은 스러지거나 병들 수 있어,
그대와 나를 갈라놓을 테니.
그러니 참된 여인의 눈으로 보아,
까닭을 알지 못한 채 나를 사랑해 주오.
그러면 그대에게는 언제나 같은 이유가 남아
나를 영원히 아껴 줄 수 있으리.
