자갈 깔린 기슭으로 물결이 밀려가듯
우리의 순간들도 저 끝을 향해 서두른다.
앞선 물결과 뒤따르는 물결이 자리를 바꾸며
잇단 수고 속에 모두 앞으로 다투어 나아간다.
탄생은 한때 빛의 큰 바다 한복판에 있다가
성숙을 향해 기어가고, 그 관을 쓰는 순간
굽은 식들이 그 영광과 맞서 싸우며
주었던 시간은 이제 제 선물을 무너뜨린다.
시간은 젊음 위에 핀 꽃을 꿰뚫고
아름다운 이마에 고랑을 판다.
자연의 진귀한 참됨을 먹어 치우고
그 낫 앞에 베이지 않을 것은 아무것도 없다.
그러나 내 시만은 훗날의 시간 속에 서 있으리라.
그 잔혹한 손에도 불구하고 너의 가치를 찬미하며.

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown'd,
Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.
