달콤하고 고요한 생각의 법정에
지난 일들의 기억을 불러낼 때,
나는 찾던 많은 것들의 결핍에 한숨짓고,
오랜 슬픔으로 내 귀한 시간의 낭비를 새로 운다.
그때 나는 흐르는 데 익숙하지 않은 눈도 적실 수 있다,
죽음의 날짜 없는 밤에 숨은 귀한 벗들을 위해.
오래전에 지워진 사랑의 고통을 새로 울고,
사라진 많은 광경의 비용을 탄식한다.
그때 나는 이미 지나간 원망들을 다시 슬퍼하고,
무거운 마음으로 슬픔에서 슬픔으로
전에 이미 탄식한 탄식의 슬픈 장부를 헤아리며,
전에 갚지 않은 것처럼 새로 갚는다.
그러나 그동안 그대를 생각하면, 사랑하는 벗이여,
모든 손실은 회복되고 슬픔은 끝난다.

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:
Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow,
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,
And weep afresh love's long since cancell'd woe,
And moan the expense of many a vanish'd sight:
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored and sorrows end.
