I.
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae farewell, and then forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me,
Dark despair around benights me.
II.
I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy:
Naething could resist my Nancy!
But to see her was to love her,
Love but her, and love for ever.
Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met—or never parted—
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.
III.
Fare-thee-weel, thou first and fairest!
Fare-thee-weel, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, Enjoyment, Love, and Pleasure!
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae farewell, alas, for ever!

다정한 입맞춤 하나, 그리고 우리는 헤어지네!
작별 하나, 그리고 영원히!
가슴을 쥐어짜는 눈물 속에서 그대에게 잔을 들고,
싸우는 한숨과 신음을 그대에게 바치리.
희망의 별을 남겨 주는 동안
누가 운명이 자신을 슬프게 한다 말하랴?
내게는 즐거운 빛 한 점도 비치지 않고,
어두운 절망이 사방에서 밤처럼 나를 덮네.
II.
나는 내 치우친 마음을 탓하지 않으리.
그 무엇도 내 낸시를 거스를 수 없었으니!
그녀를 보는 것은 곧 사랑하는 것,
오직 그녀만 사랑하고 영원히 사랑하는 것.
우리가 그토록 다정히 사랑하지 않았더라면,
그토록 눈멀어 사랑하지 않았더라면,
만나지 않았거나, 헤어지지 않았더라면,
우리는 결코 가슴 찢기지 않았으리.

잘 가라, 처음이자 가장 아름다운 이여!
잘 가라, 가장 좋고 가장 소중한 이여!
모든 기쁨과 보배가 그대의 것이 되기를,
평화와 즐거움, 사랑과 환희가!
